GHOST, THE MUSICAL

KING’S THEATRE, GLASGOW

-

GHOST is one of the most-loved films of its generation but rarely has the musical version come even close to capturing the warmth and heartbreak of the original.

However, this latest incarnation has a decent shot at it. And what it version lacks in special effects it more than makes up for in passion, tenderness and humour.

The last time the show was in town, it was more Ghastly than Ghost but it did have amazing special effects.

This time, the effects were less than special but the acting, singing and scene changes were top notch.

Sam (Andy Moss) and Molly (Carolyn Maitland) have just set up home together in Brooklyn when he is shot dead.

It looks like a mugging gone wrong but Sam’s ghost discovers something more sinister is afoot and refuses to go on to the afterlife while Molly is in danger.

Jacqui Dubois is a sensation as fraudster psychic Oda Mae – the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg.

The dialogue between her and Sam was laugh-out loud funny and she has an amazing set of pipes.

Molly and Sam both had powerfully good voices. Their versions of With You and Unchained Melody were incredibly moving.

But the rich tones of Sam Ferriday, as the villain of the piece Carl, just shaded the singing plaudits.

This is a guaranteed wring out your hankie job. Lob in a couple of gins and it’s the perfect girls’ night out. ●Finishes tomorrow.
