CV howlers that can land you in the reject pile
IF YOU’RE wondering why you keep getting “no thanks” letters rather than being called in for an interview, it could be time to give your CV the once-over.
We’ve got the lowdown on what puts bosses off and lands you in the reject pile instead of on the must-meet list.
Research from CV-Library has found that it’s silly little errors that are jeopardising future careers – with sloppy spelling mistakes the top no-no.
Creating a document that is more than two pages is a turn-off, too, along with listing unrelated skills and trying to be too clever with the layout and content.
The basics of CV writing are to create a master document that holds all your information on your work history, skills, qualifications and experience.
Then create a version of that for each job you apply for, making it relevant to the role you are applying for. Keep it tight and to no more than two pages.
And ensure it’s appealing, with a clean and easy-to-read layout. Always check and double-check for spelling errors.
Here are the top 10 things that don’t impress employers: 1. Spelling mistakes 2. Being massively underqualified for the role 3. Lists of unrelated skills 4. Too many jobs over a short period of time
5. A document longer than two pages
6. A picture – unless specifically asked for, say for a modelling job 7. Lots of buzzwords 8. Complicated layout that’s difficult to read 9. Not including a covering letter 10. No social media presence
