Hillary blazed a trail for us all, Sturgeon tells summit
NICOLA Sturgeon last night paid tribute to Hillary Clinton for being a “trailblazer” for women.
The First Minister praised the losing Democratic presidential candidate as they both attended a star-studded Women in the World summit in New York.
She said: “Hillary has been a trailblazer for woman in politics.
“She has made it easier for women like me in politics and women across the world owe Hillary a debt of gratitude.”
Sturgeon also criticised the “air of misogyny” around the US election, then quipped: “I’ll have to be careful what I say, I want to get back in.”
The First Minister broke with protocol controversially before the November election to come out in support of Clinton.
Last night she told an audience, which included actress Scarlett Johansson, rapper Queen Latifah and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, that women in power had to ensure they did the right thing.
She talked of the Tory Government’s “rape clause”, saying: “It is a disgusting and disgraceful policy … introduced by a woman prime minister.
“It’s not enough to be a woman in politics, you need to do the right thing with the power that you have.”
Earlier in the day, Sturgeon met young dancers on a Scottish Ballet exchange in New York.
