concentrated quarters with other people your whole life, when you’re becoming who you’re going to become.

“You are your most insecure and you don’t know who you are, what you want.

“But I never felt my brothers were my rivals, because I was the oldest. I always felt that I was the dauphin.”

He says The Boss Baby has “a wonderful heart”, as his character is eventually won over by the prospect of being part of the family.

He added: “Plus there are a lot of crazy scenes and wild action, because in animation, you can do anything.”

Family disharmony is something Alec can relate to. He admitted that a ranting voicemail he left for his daughter Ireland in 2007 when she was just 11 is still thrown in his face and caused a permanent break in their relationship.

The message to his daughter with ex-wife Kim came out in a court battle between the couple and the world heard him call her a “rude, thoughtless little pig” after she missed a scheduled phone call from him.

The voicemail went on: “I don’t give a damn that you’re 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you’re a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn’t care about what you do as far as I’m concerned.

“Once again I have made an a** of myself trying to get to a phone. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone.”

On Good Morning America this week, he admitted the call had a profound effect on their relationship.

He said: “It’s thrown in your face every day. There are people who admonish me or attack me and use that as a constant spearhead to do that.”

Alec has made some appearances with Ireland, now 21, in recent years but said: “It’s a scab that never heals ’cause it’s being picked at all the time by other people. My daughter, that’s hurt her in a permanent way.” His recent performances as Trump have really got people talking.

A young fan at the Boss Baby New York premiere even persuaded Baldwin to recreate the impersonation on the red carpet.

His note-perfect, fired-up portrayals of the president on US TV show Saturday Night Live have racked up millions of views online.

They also seem to have riled the real Trump, who tweeted moaning “the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse”.

Baldwin said: “The key to it is the writing. You could do the most deft, spot-on impersonation of Trump, and it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t have good writing.

“And I don’t do the most spot-on impersonation of Trump, I do my version of Trump, kind of a caricature of a more malicious Trump.

“I suppose if I spent some time, I might be able to refine my impersonation of him. But in the meantime the lines we have, we’re quoting Trump almost verbatim, so therefore we couldn’t help but make it a little angry.”

The actor, a Democrat who has reportedly previously entertained thoughts of running for mayor of New York, doesn’t think the Trump skits will continue for much longer, however.

It’s “exhausting”, for a start, plus he doesn’t know whether there’ll be an appetite for it for much longer.

He said: “If everything stays the same in this country as it is now, I don’t think people are going to be in the mood to laugh about it this September.

“As we round the corner to the one-year anniversary of the election, I think people might be in a different frame of mind. We’ll see if this is actually the first satire-resistant presidency.” ● The Boss Baby is in cinemas today.
