Alliss sexism complaints skirt real issue

-

I’M A fully paid up member of the sisterhood.

For what it’s worth, I thought David Moyes comments about giving a woman a slap were appalling. And those infamous comments from Andy Gray and Richard Keys belonged in an era when the Misogynistasaurus Rex roamed the earth.

But while there’s no doubt Peter Alliss has spouted his fair share of sexist drivel in the past, I’m struggling to comprehend the vociferous reaction to his off-mic remark that Sergio Garcia’s fiancee, Angela Akins had “the shortest skirt on the campus.” Cue a surge of complaints to the Beeb, and calls for him to be sacked. Really?

I’ve seen the photos of the skirt in question and it could be said that it was a factual observation. It wasn’t leering, it wasn’t derogatory and it didn’t objectify her. Was it inappropriate? Maybe.

But if there’s going to be an almighty uproar every time someone makes a comment that is, at worst, misguided, then there’s a danger our voices will get drowned out when we shout about stuff that is genuinely offensive. IT’S great news the Scottish Medicines Consortium have approved Kadcyla, a vital drug that extends the lives of women with terminal breast cancer.

The decision was a triumph for Lesley Stephen, Alison Tait, Lesley Graham and Anne MacLean-Chang, who campaigned for Kadcyla to be available to those who need it.

We are in their debt, because thanks to their tenacity, women who face the same battle in the future won’t have to spend a moment of the time they have left fighting for the drugs they need to live.
