with it. It’s very different now – there’s crowds of people that turn up and it’s a very different environment now but I always love it when we go there because it’s the only time when we’re all away together as a crew and cast in the hotel. It comes to life when we’re in the village, it makes everything really real and it’s such a sweet little place and the people are so lovely.”

The series, about a sleuthing vicar

I was saying their mum does not need two girls, maybe I could have one! MORVEN CHRISTIE

and local detective, was also a smash hit at Christmas, with a special which saw Morven’s character give birth.

Having split from on-screen husband Guy, and with a romantic interest in the shape of vicar James Norton, the new set-up is an intriguing one for Morven’s character Amanda.

She said: “When we start series three, Grace is about four months old and Amanda is living in a little cottage in the village, so she’s part of the Grantchester community now. She is really taking to motherhood and I think it’s a great joy for her.

“Given the challenges of being a single woman in a community like that in the 50s and raising a child by herself, I think she’s really positive about it, she seems to be having a lovely time.

“Amanda is still looking to divorce Guy – that marriage is over as far as she is concerned. It’s not any less complicated now she’s not with him though because obviously in the 50s a divorce was a very taboo thing.

“And for a vicar to try and be in a relationship with a divorced woman is fraught with issues. They have a lot of challenges to face but they really love each other.

“I think the stories throughout this series are about how much duty is going to get in the way, and people’s opinions within the community. I think Amanda gets a shock when she realises quite how difficult officially ending this marriage is going to be and just how much judgment there is about her situation.”

The only downside is facing the attentions of James’s army of adoring fans…

“For me it’s quite nice to just get on with my work and not too much attention to be on me, but there are definitely a lot of interesting responses to being his love interest.” ● Grantchester returns to ITV on Sunday, April 24, 9pm.
