This movie is written by a Scot, about a Scot and stars a Scot ..

how can it be not Scottish enough?

A NEW film written by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and starring Ewen Bremner has been rejected for funding because it is not Scottish enough.

And the fact that the movie is about Scot Alan McGee, 56, who discovered Oasis, wasn’t enough to persuade arts funding body Creative Scotland to stump up.

They turned it down as Edinburgh writer Welsh, 58, now lives in the US and the project has an English director and producers.

The movie, set to feature Miley Cyrus, could now be made outside Scotland.

Harry Potter star Nick Moran is directing the biopic about Creation Records founder McGee.

It’s billed as “a film about one of the most culturally important British figures in the music business, written by the voice of a generation”.

Moran, 47, said: “The movie couldn’t be more Scottish. The script is written by Edinburgh’s most famous writer. It’s all about Scotland’s most successful record entrepreneur and it stars Ewen Bremner.

“Irvine was spitting teeth when he found out. I emailed Creative Scotland back to say, ‘What if we co-produced it with the Bay City Rollers and got Nicola Sturgeon to play Alan McGee?’”

Other films adapted from Welsh novels – Filth and Porno – received £800,000.

Producer Nathan McGough said: “We’ll apply for funding from Yorkshire and Wales, who don’t have the same rules.”

A Creative Scotland spokesman said the project had potential. He added: “The application was assessed as not eligible as there was no confirmed finance, and sales and distribution interest.”

Funding can be re-applied for later and the spokesman said: “Involvement of an experienced Scottish-based producer would strengthen that application.”
