More than skin deep..

FIONA Ritchie’s desire to find the best natural products for her children led to a whole new career when she set up her own skincare business.

The former NHS worker, 46, began making natural and ethical products 12 years ago, before rebranding in 2015 as Siabann.

Fiona, from Glasgow and now based in Clackmannanshire, tells us about her working day as the company’s creative director and how living in Scotland inspires her range.

Why did you want to work in this industry?

I have been creating and making natural and ethical soap and skincare products for 12 years now, since my children were little.

I was feeding them organic and carefully prepared food but I became aware that the products available for their bath and skin were often full of chemicals and were not the best options for their precious skin.

What has the journey of the business been like?

I started creating, making and selling products with the support and help of family members.

Two years ago, I joined forces with my now business partner, Sue. We selected a range of my most unique and successful products and we rebranded and launched as Siabann – which is Gaelic for “soap”. The range has been constantly evolving.

Living in Scotland, I’m surrounded by beautiful scenery and all the elements.

I wanted to try to encapsulate this in a range of products that was created in Scotland and that people could give as gifts and incorporate and enjoy in their everyday life.

I absolutely love creating skincare products and exploring branding and packaging.

Did you have another job before starting your own business?

I worked as a mental health occupational therapist in the NHS before I had the kids but didn’t go back. I didn’t have to give up a paid job to start my business and I was able to grow the business as the children grew. Flexibility was key.

What training/qualifications did you need?

I did a great deal of self-learning and lots of experimenting. I attended a few artisan courses but mostly the process is one of testing and formulating products, with lots of research into the properties and qualities of oils and butters. What’s a typical day like? First, I check social media and print out web orders. Time is short but I always take a moment to pat a few drops of Siabann Facial Serum on to my face to protect it from the rigours of our weather

After the school run and dog walk, I go to the soap kitchen where I plan and make batches of products – skin candles, soap or lip balms.

The afternoon is for packing orders and liaising with retail customers. I pick the kids up and do taxi service for their activities. Then, while they’re doing their homework, I get some paperwork and invoicing done.

My day always ends with lighting a Siabann skin candle by my bed then, after 20 minutes of reading, I use the oil on my skin and I’m off to sleep.
