A MAN who murdered his flatmate’s boyfriend after being accidentally woken up by the couple has been jailed for life.

Robert Kay, 36, flew into a rage and knifed 40-year-old Carlo Volante in a “one sided violent attack” in front of his terrified girlfriend.

Mhairi Hughes screamed “You’re going to kill him” as Kay reigned blows on Volante and he shouted back “You’re f ***** g right, he’s dead.”

At the High Court in Glasgow yesterday, Kay, from Bonnyrigg, Edinburgh, pled guilty to murdering Carlo at Auld Coal Grove, Bonnyrigg, on January 3.

Judge Lady Rae jailed him for life with a minimum of 17 years, reduced from 21.

Passing sentence she said: “This was a brutal killing with an extreme level of violence used towards the deceased.”

The court heard Kay rented a room to Mhairi, who was in a relationship with Carlo.

Advocate depute Angela Gray said on January 3, Carlo and Mhairi decided to go to her mum’s house to walk the dog.

After waking Kay, the couple got involved in a row with him. It was then they decided they were moving out and started packing.

Seconds later Mhairi saw Kay running down the path.

She heard Carlo shouting “What’s this c**t all about, he has a knife” and witnesses saw Kay chase after him.

Carlo ended up on the ground and Kay stood over him and stabbed him “a number of times on the upper body”. Onlookers saw Kay slit Carlo’s throat before going back to his house.

On being told by a neighbour it was believed Carlo was dead, he said “good”.

Defence QC Donald Findlay said Kay “appreciates the awful consequences”.
