Ouch! McManus takes a £500k hit on his house

Well stopper has to tackle massive loss on pad

- STUART McDONALD

FORMER Scotland star Stephen McManus has lost more than half-a-million quid on the sale of his luxury mansion.

The Motherwell and ex-Celtic defender splashed out £1,500,000 on the five-bedroom home nine years ago – just before property prices plummeted.

Records show the house in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, has now been sold to a businessman for £990,000.

The home sits in an estate of eight houses, where former residents include Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, former Celtic star Joe Ledley and Brazilian footballer Juninho, who stayed there during his spell at the Parkhead club.

McManus, 34, put the ultramodern home, which overlooks Bothwell Castle Golf Course, on the market a year ago.

He shared the house with his wife Diane and their two young children.

Described by estate agents Residence as an “impeccably well-presented and substantial family home”, the three-storey property also has a balcony, dressing room, electronic gates and a double garage.

McManus had fitted it out with trendy decor, including hardwood flooring, black granite worktops and a modern fitted kitchen.

Photos show a grandfather clock in the hall and a picture of McManus scoring a goal for Celtic on the wall.

McManus, who won 26 Scotland caps, bought the home in January 2008 after being appointed Celtic captain.

He made 150 appearances for the Glasgow club between 2003 and 2010 before moving to Middlesbrough for £1.5million.

He signed for Motherwell in 2013.
