Huge recall after customers find sharp metal in their vegetables

FRESH green beans have been recalled by Morrisons after two customers found needles inside the vegetables.

Cancer survivor Sarah Parry only discovered the sharp metal when it stabbed her gum as she ate.

And Glaswegian Margaret Lynch found 12 of the spikes while she prepared dinner last Saturday.

The shocking incidents were 200 miles apart. Morrisons issued a nationwide recall and said they are investigating.

Margaret returned her beans to her local store. She said: “I’ve had bugs in salad and that’s more acceptable because it’s natural but I won’t be buying green beans again.

“I’ll be more careful with buying vegetables in the future.

“If I hadn’t seen them when I was cutting off the ends, I could have injured my mouth – it’s easily done.

“I luckily noticed something was wrong when I first looked at them.

“The ones I bought came on a stalk, so I can’t imagine this was done by another customer, I think it’s from the growers because they were hidden right inside.

“There’s no way a customer could have got in there and put things inside without there being more obvious warnings.

“When I went in on Sunday, they had taken them all off the shelves and there were no green beans at all. They’ve told me it’s a major investigation.

“However, when I spoke to the manager who had looked through them, they said nothing was found in the rest.

“Some poor child or pensioner could have been seriously injured.”

Mother-of-three Sarah, 41, of Manchester, said: “I’ve just got over cancer and as a result I lost a lot of my teeth.

“I chew with my front teeth and luckily I didn’t swallow it the needle. It stabbed me in the gum.

“I dread to think if it was my four-year-old little girl who had been eating it or another child.”

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We have been made aware of two incidents involving metal being found in two packets of green beans. The health and safety of our customers is our top priority so, as a precaution, we are recalling the products and are continuing with our investigation.

“The relevant authorities have been informed and we are also talking to the two customers.”

The Food Standards Agency issued a product recall warning urging customers with Morrisons Trimmed Beans 170g dated from April 22 to 24, 2017 to return them to the store for a full refund.

They say the “product may contain small pieces of metal that could represent a safety risk”.

The product recall notice states: “As a precautionary measure, we are recalling the above product as there is a very small risk that some packs may contain pieces of metal.

“We are asking all customers who have bought these Display Until dates of this product not to consume them and to return them to their nearest Morrisons store, where they can receive a full refund.”
