Condition can worsen over time
MULTIPLE sclerosis is a neurological condition caused by damage to the fibre which protects the nerves within the central nervous system.
For some sufferers, symptoms develop and worsen over time, for others they come and go.
The most common symptoms include fatigue, problems with mobility and balance, pain, muscle spasms and muscle tightness.
There is currently no cure and the cause is still the subject of much research – including at Glasgow University. “Of the 10 mainland health boards only four have sustainable levels of MS nurse provision. “This is particularly visible in Lanarkshire, where there is only one MS specialist nurse post, which holds a caseload of around 1200 patients. “This is unsustainable and has significant implications for people with MS in the area.” Speaking at the start of MS Awareness Week, Morna revealed there are serious concerns about patients’ welfare.
