We’ll stand up for the rights of workers
I’M DUE to speak at the STUC annual congress in Aviemore today.
And I’ll be announcing £250,000 in funding to help limit the impact of Tory legislation on trade unions.
Last year, we established a fund to help limit the negative impact of the Trade Union Act.
It ensures that trade union reps are not needlessly diverted by the requirements of the Act from their most important role – supporting their members and promoting fairer work practices.
Workers’ rights are under real threat by Theresa May’s Government and the legislation they have passed is designed purely to frustrate those trying to protect workers.
Unions play a hugely important role in ensuring decent pay and conditions.
They also help in creating a more engaged, skilled workforce and in boosting workplace productivity, which is vital for the economy as a whole.
In other European countries, unions are properly integrated into decision-making in the workplace. But in the Tories’ eyes, they are another enemy to be crushed.
The right-wing of the PM’s party are itching to use Brexit as the chance they have been waiting for to rip up longestablished workers’ rights and protections. They cannot be allowed to get away with it.
