Astronaut Peggy sets US record

ASTRONAUT Peggy Whitson has broken the record for the longest time spent in space by an American.

The Internatio­nal Space Station commander surpassed the previous best of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes, set last year by Jeffrey Williams.

Whitson, 57, is already the world’s most experience­d spacewoman and female spacewalke­r. And she is the oldest woman to have gone into space.

By the time she returns to Earth in September, she will have logged 666 days in orbit over three flights.

President Donald Trump called Whitson on the space station to pass on his congratula­tions.

He said her achievemen­t was “incredible”.

The world record of 879 days is held by Russian astronaut Gennady Padalka. A LUCKY Tunnock’s worker took the biscuit when he won £50,000 from a £2.50 flutter at his local bookies.

Alan Thomson, who makes the famous teacakes and caramel logs for a living, stuck a 20,000-1 accumulato­r bet on 15 English football matches.

He’s now planning to tie the knot with fiancee Nico Love in Las Vegas, put a deposit on a house and says he will treat his nieces and nephews.

Alan, 28, was in a rush on Saturday and just skimmed through the football coupon at Betfred in his home town of Uddingston, Lanarkshir­e.

He picked matches at random, betting on whether there would be an odd or even amount of goals in each game.

Alan said: “It took me 10 seconds to fill in the coupon. It was the first time I have done this bet.
