Hols threat over £42m food poisoning scams

MILLIONS of Brits could be banned from all-inclusive holidays in Spain because of fake food poisoning claims.

The move by Spanish hotel owners comes after allegation­s that UK holidaymak­ers have fleeced them out of £42million in compensati­on in the last 18 months.

While it is unclear how much food poisoning costs the Spanish tourist industry, the number of claims has gone up by 700 per cent in the last year and UK travel body ABTA said scams were on the rise.

Fed-up hoteliers in Majorca are demanding an outright ban on Brits taking all-inclusive food and drink breaks to prevent payouts of up to WHEN you’re desperate to pass your exams, it would be daft to rule out anything that might bring you some luck.

At least, that must be what these St Andrews University £5000. The Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Costa Dorada have seen the highest number of scams.

Unscrupulo­us “no win, no fee” firms are behind the lucrative sickness claims and are replacing outfits cashing in on the mis-selling of PPI, students had in mind when they decided to charge into the freezing North Sea yesterday.

The May Dip is a tradition at the famous institutio­n and is said to bring good fortune during exams in the weeks that follow.

But their first stroke of luck might be avoiding the cold after their exploits. which has cost banks £37.3billion in payouts.

The president of the Hotel Business Federation of Majorca, Inmaculada Benito, said: “The only way to address this once and for all is by taking drastic measures.”

Under current law, holidaymak­ers only need a receipt for a product which treats food poisoning to file a claim once they are home.

But the Federation want a change that forces tourists to go to a doctor first to verify sickness.

One hotel owner from Salou on the Costa Dorado said he was £25,000 out of pocket following a family’s dodgy claim.

He said: “It’s a scandal. Strangely, they were the only ones who got sick.”
