Humza Yousaf, Laura Boyd, Charline Joiner and Keith Irving at the Glasgow Green launch TRANSPORT Minister Humza Yousaf has been told to get on his bike – for Scotland’s biggest cycling event.

A keen cyclist, he will join thousands of other people who are expected to sign up for Pedal for Scotland, the annual mass-participation cycle event between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

He was joined by Commonwealth silver medallist Charline Joiner, STV2 presenter Laura Boyd and Cycling Scotland chief executive Keith Irving at the launch of the 19th Pedal for Scotland.

The September 10 event includes the childfriendly 10-mile Wee Jaunt, the family-favourite 45-mile Classic Challenge route on fully closed roads or the more taxing Big Belter, a 90-plus mile route that also starts in Glasgow but goes via

Pedal for Scotland is a brilliant way for people of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes and enjoy the health and social benefits of cycling.

Well-planned massparticipation routes like this can also be a stepping stone to more activity.

“These events encourage everyone to get on their bike, regardless of age and levels of fitness, and try one of the rides that is best suited to them,” said Mr Yousaf.

“More than 10,000 people will take part in the Pedal for Scotland events this summer and I am pleased to be part of one of the biggest massparticipation cycling events in Scotland.”

STV2 presenter Laura said: “I am getting back in the saddle for my third time taking part in Pedal for Scotland. I never thought I would be able to cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh but the camaraderie, challenge and added incentive of cake stops along the way makes it one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had, with a real sense of achievement at the end.

“I’ve also put in a special request to my pal Sean Batty to ensure the sun shines on us!”

Mr Irving added: “Last year, 80 per cent of participants completed the Classic Challenge with a friend, family member or colleague.

“So the 45-mile Classic Challenge presents an ideal opportunity to try cycling an achievable distance through some of Scotland’s finest scenery.

“Now in its 19th year, Pedal for Scotland is a great day out and each year we see more and more people then cycle for everyday journeys, having been inspired by their achievement.”
