MICHAEL GARDYNE believes battered pride at failing to make the top six is driving Ross County towards a stirring finish to the Premiership campaign.

Victory at Motherwell today would go a long way towards helping the Staggies stay up.

But Gardyne insists only a seventh-place best-of-the-rest finish will satisfy the dressing room. He said: “After getting into the top six last season and winning the Cup we feel we’ve let ourselves down this year.

“It hasn’t been what we wanted but we have to do our best to get seventh place.

“We took great confidence from the derby win and that’s four games unbeaten.

“We’ve been playing well. A lot of it is about momentum at this time of the season and we’ve got that right now. It’s been a bit of an up and down season and you could say we’ve been down for a lot of it but we’re hopeful of finishing strongly.

“We didn’t want to be in the bottom six so it has been a disappointing season for everyone here because we felt we could get into the top half.

“But it didn’t happen and now seventh is the best we can finish. So hopefully we can end up best of the rest.

“The manager has been stressing to us it’s nowhere near done yet. The league has been incredible this year because there has been so little between so many of the teams.

“We’ve been defending well as a team lately. Hopefully we can keep that up as well as score a few at the other end.”
