RANDY OLD DUKE

Ex-comrade spills beans on Prince Philip

- TONY JONES reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

THE Duke of Edinburgh has been described as a “randy” young officer by a former Royal Navy shipmate.

Prince Philip is usually the elderly man who is quick with a gaffe – but yesterday he was upstaged by ex-naval commander Keith Evans.

The 97-year-old, who served alongside Philip in the late 40s, joked about the Queen’s consort when the royal couple visited Keith’s old school.

They were attending a service of thanksgiving celebrating the 100th anniversary of Pangbourne College in Berkshire.

Asked about his recollections of the 95-year-old prince, Keith replied: “He was a bit randy … but you had better not put that down.”

Questioned further about his quip, he willingly agreed to be quoted.

And, in a move worthy of Philip himself, he said the word “very” should be inserted before randy.

The duke announced last week that he will retire from public duties in the autumn and Keith joked: “Like KATY Perry’s teacup poodle was as good as gold as she shot her first TV ad.

Nugget stole the limelight from her popstar owner in their joint commercial for Citi Bank.

The pooch, who clearly enjoyed being fussed over as she sat on a personalised chair, said in a statement: “The ad campaign finally puts me on the pedestal on which I belong.” Prince Philip, I’m standing down from most things in August.”

In an apparent reference to the Queen, he added: “I think it is rather good news. He’ll do what he wants rather than what she tells him to do.”

Pangbourne College was founded by shipowner Sir Thomas Lane Devitt to prepare boys to be officers in the Merchant Navy.
