DIRECTOR WANTS FILM PREMIERE IN EDINBURGH

which seems to suck up light in such a fantastic way. Initally, we didn’t plan to shoot the sequence at night but seeing the city at night and seeing how deep and rich the black gets, it’s very unique.

“It’s like Venice – a city where light seems to work a little differently – and it set a very intense, moody scene for this very intense action sequence. It helped us craft what will be a very unique experience.”

As well as filming in Edinburgh and locations along the east coast, Anthony, 47, and Joe, 45, from Cleveland, Ohio, had enough down time to see more of the area.

Outdoors fan Anthony would hike up and down Arthur’s Seat when he had the chance. And the whole family came over for a get-together in St Andrews, where Joe’s daughter studies and where he has given guest lectures in the past.

With a real love for Scotland, Anthony said both Russos – who worked on hit sitcoms Arrested Development and Community before Marvel – were delighted it seems to be mutual.

He said they and their stellar cast were blown away by the positive reception from locals, adding: “I am very grateful for that because the last thing we want to do is come here and create an environment that people don’t like.

“We want everyone to have a positive experience, we want to leave a good taste in their mouths as filmmakers. It’s a wonderful location and I’d love to go back so I want to make sure everyone involved in allowing us to shoot there has a positive experience as well.

“We know fans of these films are very passionate, very dedicated and very thoughtful. They participate in this ongoing narrative in a very active way. Joe and I were fans before we joined the Marvel family so we can relate to that excitement for the work being done by Marvel. “Every opportunity there is to interact with fans, we look for and the opportunities in Scotland have been very respectful.”

The film is expected to reunite the Avengers, who were split at the end of last year’s Captain America: Civil War when half the team went on the run after refusing to register as superheroes. After wrapping in Edinburgh, the crew are now filming down south in Durham before heading for studios in Atlanta.

Anthony admitted that seeing their childhood heroes on set still gives them shivers.

He said: “We definitely have that experience and you can see it on the faces of all the crew members as well, when you get a certain combination of characters show up on set in costume and you see these little grins poking out.

“It’s a very rare and awesome fantasy experience.”
