Kadcyla cancer campaign up for award

- VIVIENNE AITKEN v.aitken@dailyrecord.co.uk

A CAMPAIGN supported by the Daily Record has been nominated for two leading charity awards.

The Record, along with Breast Cancer Now and four brave Scottish women with terminal breast cancer, campaigned for all Scottish women who need it to be given Kadcyla.

The drug promises an extra six months of life for women with metastasised HER2 positive breast cancer. Last month, the Scottish Medicines Consortium announced approval of the drug.

We told the stories of the four women. Lesley Graham, Lesley Stephen and Anne Maclean-Chang owe their lives to Kadcyla, while Alison Tait was praying she would be able to get it when her condition reaches the final stage.

Yesterday, Breast Cancer Now were shortlisted for the Cracking Campaign Award at the SCVO’s Scottish Charity Awards.

Their Unlock Kadcyla campaign is also up for the People’s Choice Award. It is voted for by the pubic.

In just six days, the campaign got 13,000 signatures on a petition demanding it be made available. Breast Cancer Now director Mary Allison said: “This nomination is a wonderful way to celebrate this astounding victory and to thank everyone involved in making this campaign a success.”
