NEW CCTV CLUE IN HUNT FOR KILLER

Scots detective probing 2012 death on Costa Brava believes Frenchmen hold key to finding Craig’s murderer

-

THE family of a Scot murdered in Spain hope newly discovered CCTV footage could bring his killer to justice five years on.

Craig Mallon, who was in the resort of Lloret de Mar on his brother’s stag weekend, died after a single punch to the head.

He was attacked in the street as he returned from a night out at about 6am on May 19, 2012.

But police on the Costa Brava have not made any arrests in the case, to the frustration of Craig’s parents Ian and Antoinette, who live in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.

Now a Scots former senior detective has unearthed CCTV footage from the local police station less than an hour after the killing.

And he believes four Frenchmen seen going into the police station could be the key to bringing someone to trial for 26-year-old quantity surveyor Craig’s murder.

Former detective superintendent David Swindle, who brought serial killer Peter Tobin to justice, was called in by Craig’s employers, engineering firm Laing O’Rourke.

Swindle said: “The fatal blow was inflicted on Craig in front of numerous potential witnesses in a busy street.

“I would have thought that would have been a simple investigation. Basic steps were not followed.”

The investigator added the CCTV showed four Frenchmen going into the police station at 6.40am.

He said: “These are the four French people who hold the key to what happened to Craig Mallon. They were at the scene when the incident happened.

“They had their car towed away from a street behind the place where Craig was killed.

“It’s important we trace these four people. And I’m sure social media will drive this and we’ll eventually get there.”

Ian Mallon, 51, said: “I just think that if it happened in this country, they’d be caught within 48 hours, 24 hours. It’s as if they just let it go.

“Craig was 26 years of age and had his full life ahead of him. And we just think he’s been taken away and it’s as if they want it brushed under the carpet.”

Police in Spain said they could not comment on an open inquiry.
