Roar of the fans made me forget toothache

- CRAIG SWAN sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

GARY ANDERSON started out with toothache in Aberdeen and ended up with earache.

The Scot lost his six-year unbeaten record in the Granite City to Michael van Gerwen but says it was still an unforgettable evening thanks to the 3000 fans who backed him.

Anderson said: “You know what it’s like with toothache, it makes your head explode with pain at times.

“When I actually did the walk-on and got on stage, the fans were so incredibly loud I almost forget the pain.

“I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, the Scottish fans are simply the greatest in the world.

“They pick you up when you’re down and just never stop singing.

“The noise made every hair on my neck stand on end. I never get tired of it. These are such special moments in my career.

“Obviously I’m really annoyed I couldn’t get a result for them. It was always going to be tough because Michael was on his game. In the end he was a bigger pain than my teeth.

“But he moved up a gear when he needed to and I wasn’t anywhere near my A game. You just can’t afford that against Michael.”

Anderson will now face van Gerwen in the last four of the Betway Premier League at London’s O2 on Thursday night.

He said: “If I’m good enough on the night I know I’ll beat Michael and win the final, no matter who I play.”
