McILROY BACK IN BIT OF PAIN
RORY McILROY fears his injured back could keep him out of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in a fortnight.
The world No.2 will head to Belfast on Monday for a scan after the Players Championship in Florida.
Even playing in pain McIlroy still made the cut with an even-par total at TPC Sawgrass.
He superbly birdied the last for a second round of 71 yesterday and admitted: “I’ve been struggling a bit this week.
“It’s OK, it’s manageable. My back is obviously not 100 per cent but it’s good enough to get myself around here for the next couple of days.
“I should be sponsored by Advil I’ve taken that many pills!
“So, I’m going for a MRI on Monday to make sure it’s not serious and then I’ll see what we do from there.”
McIlroy reigned supreme at the BMW PGA in 2014 and would hate to miss out.
He said: “It’s in the same area as the injury at the start of the year.
“If that was an eight or a nine in terms of pain and soreness and stiffness, this is around a four or five.
“So it might just be a flare-up of what happened previously but there are so many unknowns.”
A back injury forced former Masters champion Danny Willett to withdrew after nine holes of his second round. He was 11 over par at the time.
