Blues and Greens go into Super big battle

- FRASER WILSON

IT’S not often a third-tier fixture can be described as match of the day but Larkhall Thistle v St Roch’s today is exactly that.

Two sides separated by three points in the fight for promotion to the Superleague. And rivalry?

The fact one side wears green, go into a pre-match huddle and have a midfielder swanning around with No.67 on his back – really – and the other is, well, Larkhall tells you all you need to know.

The reverse fixture last month which ended 1-1 attracted 740 to Jimmy McGrory Park and Gasworks Park, Larkhall, will host another big crowd today.

It’s the final game of the campaign for the hosts while Andy Cameron’s St Roch’s – three points adrift – have one to play.

That, of course, means Larkhall can’t afford defeat. I’ve seen both up close and it’s fair to say it will come down to who performs on the day. Expect fireworks as the Rock’s young team, a poor man’s version of the Green Brigade, arrive with their flags and pyro. They’re not everyone’s cup of tea but you can’t deny they add colour.

On the park, Larkhall have pace and a goal threat with top talent Graham Gracie. The Rock are experienced at the back and middle, and with big Baboucarr Mussa up top anything is possible.

But Cameron has never beaten Larkhall in four attempts. A draw would suit his side but a win puts them on course for a firstever Superleague stint.

Both sides are at the other end of the table to us at relegated Johnstone Burgh. After nine years at the club, I can safely say this is the lowest point.

We need players and fresh blood on the committee as the champions of the west 15 years ago are now destined for the bottom division.
