We scoop EIGHT prizes at Oscars of news
THE Daily Record has been crowned Newspaper of the Year – for the third time in a row.
Our top team were named the top title at a glittering ceremony at the 38th annual Scottish Press Awards.
We scooped seven other trophies – Digital Team of the Year, Front Page of the Year, Journalist of the Year, Reporter of the Year, Sports News Writer of the Year, Political Journalist of the Year and News Photographer of the Year.
Daily Record editor Murray Foote welcomed the string of awards.
He said: “This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the whole Daily Record team.
“It was a great night and to win Newspaper of the Year three years running is just fantastic. “Well done to everyone.” The Record clinched Front Page of the Year for “I’m the victim”, a story by Jane Hamilton about a teacher’s fling with a pupil at a school prom night.
Sport’s Keith Jackson picked up Sports News Writer of the Year for the sixth year in a row for his top-notch exclusives – and won Journalist of the Year. Westminster editor Torcuil Crichton was named Political Journalist of the Year while health editor Vivienne Aitken picked up Reporter of the Year.
Alasdair MacLeod snapped up News Photographer of the Year.
The Record team were in the running for a number of gongs when judges announced their shortlist for the 2017 awards.
Former Record reporter Chris Clements came second for Scoop of the Year for exposing alleged sex offender Jim McCafferty, while Gary Ralston was runner-up in Sports News Writer of the Year.
Cheri Burns and Sarah Vesty were in the running for Young Journalist of the Year, while Debbie Jackson and former Record man Paul English were up for Outstanding Digital Journalist of the Year.
Stephen Stewart was up for Interviewer of the Year.
While the Record dominated the awards night, another Media Scotland title landed a prestigious gong. The Ayrshire Post won Weekly Newspaper of the Year.
