Pauline pints in aid of charity

Ebola nurse & pals on pub crawl fundraiser

EBOLA nurse Pauline Cafferkey has hit the booze ahead of her return to Sierra Leone.

The brave Scot – who will head back to the African country where she caught the disease next week – took part in the Glasgow subcrawl to raise money for Street Child.

She’s set to run the charity’s annual marathon in Sierra Leone with two friends.

And the subcrawl – the cult drinking game which involves getting off at each of the 15 stops on Glasgow’s underground and going for a drink in the nearest pub – was to raise extra cash to help the needy kids in Africa.

Pauline, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, roped in a group of pals to don fancy dress and gather donations from punters as they did the subcrawl at the weekend.

She said: “That was my first time doing the subcrawl. We never managed a drink in every pub, mainly because we had a few in the first, but we did make it all the way around.

“We were all dressed as old women. My sister was especially noticeable because she was dressed as Mrs Brown from the TV show.

“We raised a couple of hundred pounds from the people in the pubs and those with us donated about that much as well.”

Pauline was the first Brit to be infected by Ebola in December 2014.

She had been treating those suffering from it.

Since then, she has faced several relapses and setbacks but is now looking to enjoy life again.

The 41-yearold said of her self-funded trip: “I am looking forward to it.

“People keep asking if I am worried about catching Ebola again but, if anything, I don’t have a chance of catching it because I will be immune.

“Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. It suffered from civil war for a long time and had just started to recover when Ebola struck.

“The people are nice but they have had such a horrible time. I’ll be going back this time at a different stage for the country.”
