Britons spend an astonishin­g £2.8billion a year on crisps, nuts and popcorn and the snacks take up more aisle space in supermarke­ts than anything else.

According to a survey, we snack on average seven times a week – although we probably didn’t need a nationwide poll to tell us we love snacking. But this is a fascinatin­g romp along the production lines of our favourites.

Simon Rimmer and Sophie Morgan explore how snacks are made, marketed and why we can’t resist them.

Sophie heads to the Golden Wonder factory in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshi­re, where the journey from potato to crisp packet takes just 14 minutes.

We also find out how they make honeycoate­d peanuts at KP and how producers are making popcorn posh with outlandish new flavours.
