CANED OR ABLE: We mark the Premiership

-

IT’S the end of Premiership term and the results are in, now it’s time to dish out the report cards.

Some clubs have passed their test with flying colours while others have earned pass marks by the skin of their teeth.

Then there are those who have completely flunked the class.

Record Sport has summoned all 12 clubs to the headmaster’s office … DUNDEE goalscoring legend Gordon Wallace certainly knew the route to goal.

Sadly for Wallace this season his beloved Dark Blues didn’t – 38 goals in 38 Premiership games tells its own sorry story.

Wallace said: “Dundee were always going to be up against it, especially when they said goodbye to a strikeforce in Kane Hemmings and Greg Stewart who scored 36 goals between them the season before.

“That kind of quality is difficult for any manager to replace and to lose the two of them in quick succession was bad luck for Dundee.

“But the club couldn’t afford to turn down the money that was on offer for both. It was no surprise then the team this season struggled to score.

“They didn’t have another ready-made goalscorer to come in to replace either of them.

“The young boy Craig Wighton is still learning his trade and needs time. But he needs to play alongside a more experienced forward.

“Marcus Haber was brought in and ended up top scorer on nine. But you want your main threat to get into double figures.

“It’s not easy to get a consistent goalscorer into a club like Dundee but that’s a huge reason why the team blew hot and cold all season.

“They were capable of hitting heights as they showed by beating Rangers in February. But they were also battered by the likes of Aberdeen and Hamilton.

“They faded really badly at two critical junctures in the season. There seemed to be no happy medium with Dundee.”
