Jamie needed patience for a journey to top

- CRAIG SWAN

JAMIE MURPHY reckons patience has built him up to the greatest period of his career.

The Brighton attacker is celebrating a call-up for the Scotland squad for the showdown against England just a short time after winning promotion to the Premier League.

Aged 27, Murphy has to wait for the major moments. But he believes taking small steps and mapping a sensible career path is now paying rich dividends.

He said: “It’s been a good year all round. We worked hard all year to get to the Premier League and to finally get there is great.

“Then there’s the Scotland squad and you don’t get many bigger games than England. One and play for a big club like Sheffield United and build it up from there definitely helped me.

“It worked for me, playing at Motherwell, giving everything I had and doing it for enjoyment. Then you get into the first team. I played 200-odd games then that’s you ready to move on.

“There have always been doubts when you don’t get in squads. When these things don’t go for you you wonder if you’re doing the right thing.

“But you’ve just got to stick with it and keep working hard every day. Not never have a day off but when you’re training give everything you’ve got.

“I’m the perfect example of where that can take you.”
