From Back Page leading them to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals where they lost 4-1 to eventual winners Celtic at Parkhead.

Ross is rebuilding his squad for a tilt at the Championship next season – but Dundee are now keen to talk to him.

It’s understood the Dens Park board will request permission from St Mirren to speak to him this week about the vacancy.

A compensation fee would need to be agreed between the club but the Dark Blues are keen to find Hartley’s successor quickly and Jack is one of their prime targets after McCann called time on his shortlived spell as manager.

The former Dundee, Hearts and Rangers winger said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Dens Park for their hard work in the time I was manager there.

“It was an honour to become manager of the club where my playing career started and finished and I’m very proud I was able to succeed in keeping them in the Scottish Premiership.

“I wish them great success in the future.”

Dundee will now begin the process of appointing a new manager to take the reins on a permanent basis at Dens Park.

Managing director John Nelms took time to pay tribute to McCann for stepping into the breach at such a critical stage in the league campaign.

He said: “On behalf of the entire Dundee Football Club family I’d like to thank Neil for his interim spell in charge of the team.

“He came in and did the job we asked him to do. The club once again owes him a debt of gratitude.

“Neil is most certainly a credit to Dundee Football Club and to Scottish football as a whole.”
