Gers set to snap up Alves

-

From Back Page and have also opened talks with Norwich in a bid to sign midfielder Graham Dorrans.

Light Blues boss Pedro Caixinha is more hopeful than ever of making countryman Alves the first signing of his Ibrox reign.

Italian sources claim the £500,000 deal with Cagliari could even be completed before the weekend but Alves is unlikely to be available for Rangers before mid-July.

The 35-year-old has been called up by Portugal boss Fernando Santos for their friendly against Cyprus on Saturday, followed by their World Cup qualifier in Latvia on June 9.

The Portuguese then head to Russia for the Confederations Cup between June 17 and July 2, overlapping with Rangers’ Europa League campaign, which kicks off on June 29.

The Ibrox side report back for pre-season training on Monday and Caixinha is also hopeful of having Jack and Dorrans in his squad as he begins his rebuilding job.

Rangers are working on several deals but a work permit remains a stumbling block for a quick arrival for Mexican playmaker Carlos Pena.

Caixinha remains keen but the player has not played enough games for Mexico in the last two years to qualify for an automatic visa and Rangers must argue their case in front of an SFA-approved committee.

Vitoria Setubal defender Fabio Cardoso, available for £1million, is also on their shopping list and he could be joined by Benfica B striker Dalcio on a season-long loan.

Rangers will not be moving for Motherwell striker Louis Moult, who was on Caixinha’s radar but his interest has now cooled.

Meanwhile, Ibrox flop Philippe Senderos has been of fered the chance to relaunch his career in his Swiss homeland with Servette.

The former Arsenal defender had a miserable season in Glasgow and was ignored by Caixinha who promptly released him at the end of the season.

Now Servette have made an approach to try to land the 32-year-old.
