Highland axefalls onRichie afterflop

INVERNESS have axed gaffer Richie Foran after he failed to keep them in the top flight.

The former club captain was handed a four-year deal when he succeeded Scottish Cup-winning boss John Hughes last summer.

But his debut campaign turned into a disaster as Caley Thistle finished bottom of the Premiership.

He won just seven league games and new chairman Willie Finlayson has decided to hand the task of leading Inverness back up to someone else.

Finlayson, who succeeded Kenny Cameron last week, said: “Richie has been a great servant. He put 100 per cent into his job as manager and previously as a player.

“We all thank him for his service and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Foran was given his management chance after Hughes quit in protest at cuts to his playing budget.

But the ex-Motherwell, Shelbourne and Carlisle frontman believed the money handed to him would be sufficient to see the club challenging for a top-six slot.

However, the writing appeared to be on the wall right from the beginning as they lost their opening four league games.

A brief upturn in results saw Foran named Manager of the Month for September but Inverness were soon adrift at the foot of the table.

And three wins after the league split weren’t enough to save them from the drop.
