FANTASIST POISONER DROPS JAIL SENTENCE APPEAL BID
Sicko made wife ill for three years
A POISONER who put his wife through three years of hell has dropped his bid to appeal against his jail sentence.
David Smith, 62, got three-and-a-half years in March for what a sheriff called “a prolonged and evil course of conduct”.
He repeatedly put laxatives in his businesswoman wife Elizabeth’s food, leaving her so gaunt, weak and ill that her family feared she was dying. He stole thousands of pounds from her bank account while she was sick.
Smith is a serial liar and fantasist who falsely told Elizabeth he had served in the SAS and helped free hostages from the Iranian embassy in 1980. He also told her he owned a factory worth millions.
After she got him to confess to poisoning her, he falsely claimed to have cancer to try to stop her telling the police.
Elizabeth recorded him begging for mercy, telling her: “Please, please, please do not get the police involved. Please promise me. Please don’t get the police involved, please, Liz, please.”
Gran Elizabeth, 62, of Ayr, said after Smith was jailed: “He made me so ill. The kids could have lost their gran.
“I was never away from the doctor and was admitted to hospital but no one knew what was wrong.
“He was my whole world. I loved him with every bone in my body.
“Now I hate him. He told me so many lies. I never knew him.”
A spokesman for the Sheriff Appeal Court said: “We can confirm that Mr Smith’s appeal against his sentence has been abandoned.”
