And as Alves checked into Ibrox, a double deal for his countrymen Dalcio and Daniel Candeias was edging ever closer.

The Benfica pair are high on the hitlist and, although reports in Portugal last night suggesting transfers for both had been concluded are understood to be inaccurate, Record Sport believe the moves are almost finalised.

Candeias has yet to play a first-team game for Benfica having spent the past three seasons on loan at Nurnberg, Granada, Metz and Alanyaspor in Turkey.

The 29-year-old is in line for a permanent move while 21-year-old hitman Dalcio, who has been starring for the B Team, is a one-year loan.

Alves has already signed and yesterday said: “I have this feeling and this desire to win and I think to move here will bring this back to me and to my career.

“I want to be a champion again and I expect to win here for the fans and for the club. I think I can do this here.”

Pedro Caixinha is thrilled at the capture and believes Alves can be his rock. The Rangers boss said: “In my opinion all teams need to be built and organised from the back and Bruno is a very talented and experienced player.

“He is also really mature and a leader with a strong character, so I’m very happy that he has signed a two-year deal with us at the beginning of this new project and this new cycle we want to start with Rangers. I’m also very happy of course that he’s my first signing.”

Caixinha, meanwhile, has been handed a boost in his bid to get Carlos Pena’s deal over the line.

Chivas counterpart Matias Almeyda has written a personal letter of endorsement to Department of Employment chiefs to pave the way for the midfielder’s move.

Both clubs have reached agreement over a transfer fee and Pena is now awaiting clearance over a work permit to travel to Scotland and sign.

Almeyda said: “I have sent a letter recommending him so that the transfer can succeed.

“He is going to be transferred to Scottish football. I hope he has the experience of playing in another league, in another country.

“It will help him in his growth as a person.”
