SCOTS OUT ON A LIM AT WORLD CUP

DARTS

SCOTLAND suffered their biggest-ever darting World Cup humiliation last night after being slung out by Singapore.

Tournament favourites Gary Anderson and Peter Wright were humbled by a shocking 5-2 defeat in the opening round.

The Tartan pair failed to fire, yet the result plumbed the depths. Paul Lim and Harith Lim proved too good for the Scottish pair who both had an absolute nightmare in Germany.

Anderson and Wright both toiled in the doubles format and shocking scoring and dreadful finishing saw them tumble to the nation’s worst-ever World Cup loss.

The pair had no excuses as they were outplayed and Paul Lim said: “This is an honour. To win this game is incredible.

“We were excited about the draw as Gary and Peter are two of the best players in the world but the pressure was on them and doubles is different.”

Meanwhile, Samba slinger Diogo Portela reckons he’s like Ronaldo and can shine for Brazil at a World Cup.

The 28-year-old left his home in Rio de Janiero to base himself in the UK and is the first Brazilian to compete on the PDC circuit.

Having competed at the Qualifying School and on the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour for the past two years, Portela has made his European Tour debut in 2017 and also played in the six Coral UK Open Qualifiers and a series of Players Championship events.

He helped to organise the qualifier in his homeland which saw Alexandre Sattin, a forensics expert for the Federal Police, secure his chance to compete in Frankfurt.

The Brazilian duo open up their challenge tonight against fellow debutants Switzerland and Portela can’t wait. He said: “After my appearance on the European Tour my social media went crazy!

“I emailed the PDC chairman and told him that people want to see Brazil in the World Cup. He replied straight away, saying: ‘No problem!’

“I owned a business in Brazil, but I sold it, quit and came to England. I’ve been living in England for two years. I’ve just quit my job to play darts professionally.

“I used to work for L’Oreal then I taught maths at school part-time, which helps with darts.

“My game is like Brazilian superstar footballer Ronaldo. He could have done 10 times more, but he had three knee injuries. Everyone said it was over, but he came back and proved people wrong.

“We’ve got a tough game with Switzerland in the beginning. But if we can get through it, we might get lucky enough to play the Netherlands. This is what I’m hoping for.”
