Neilis Dee boss after Jackopts for Saints
NEIL McCANN last night completed an astonishing U-turn by accepting the job as Dundee boss.
He was announced as manager just hours after St Mirren boss Jack Ross rejected a switch to Dens Park to complete a chaotic week that left the club desperate to save face.
McCann’s decision not to
take the post on a permanent basis and return to his pundit role with Sky after a five-week spell as interim boss where he guided the side to Premiership safety had been announced by the club on Tuesday.
But the former Dark Blues star’s change of heart late last night came after talks between Ross and Dundee managing director John Nelms – who had travelled to Spain for a face-to-face meeting – failed over personal terms.
Record Sport understands McCann contacted Nelms and a deal has now been struck.
And the saga sees Ross returning from holiday on Sunday to sign a new improved contract with the Buddies with the promise of a better budget for next season’s Championship campaign.
McCann said: “After completing my spell as interim manager I returned to Sky Sports fully committed to fulfilling my duties and continuing my career in broadcasting.
“In the past few days however I’ve had time to think about the opportunity of being manager of Dundee full-time and decided it was too good to turn down.
“I’m looking forward to being in charge for the new season and work has already begun on a number of fronts.”
And Nelms added: “Neil’s been our No.1 choice since taking over as interim manager.”
Ross yesterday distanced himself from the Dundee vacancy and confirmed he intends to stay in Paisley to lead St Mirren’s bid to return to the top flight.
His statement read: “I remain focused on continuing to build on the momentum we created in the second half of last season.
“It remains my responsibility to reward the loyalty and passion of our supporters with a team which they can be proud of.”
