Jury find strangler guilty of murder
A MAN who strangled his sister with his bare hands was yesterday convicted of her murder.
Charles Gordon, who is facing a life sentence after being found guilty of killing Elizabeth Bowe at her flat in St Andrews, smirked as he was led away to the cells.
The 52-year-old admitted killing his 50-year-old sister but denied it was murder. He claimed he only grabbed her by the neck after she threatened to knife him and accuse him of raping her.
But the jury did not believe Gordon and convicted him of murdering Elizabeth by compressing her neck on September 17 last year. She died in hospital three days later.
The High Court in Glasgow heard Gordon strangled his sister before calling 999 and telling the operator : “I think I’ve killed my sister.”
When asked why he did it, Gordon replied: “Because she was a cheeky b ***** d, growling aw night.”
Gordon was also accused of raping his sister, who was found naked from the waist down, but that charge was withdrawn at the end of the Crown case.
Judge John Morris QC deferred sentence until next month for background reports.
Detective Chief Inspector Rory Hamilton, who led the investigation, said: “Charles Gordon carried out a horrific attack on his younger sister.
“I hope her family and friends can now begin to move on with their lives following this conviction.”
