Pena’s permit wait at Ibrox

- GARY RALSTON

CARLOS PENA will jet home to Mexico today after taking a huge step closer to becoming a Rangers player.

Pena ironed out the final details of a three-year contract yesterday morning on a whistlestop visit to Scotland before undergoing a medical in Glasgow in the afternoon.

Pena, 27, is now waiting on the go-ahead from an independent three-man panel who will meet next week and decide if he should be approved for a work permit.

The Chivas Guadalajara

playmaker has been capped 19 times for his country but has only played twice in the last 12 months – against Chile and Paraguay – and falls short of the criteria for an automatic visa.

If the panel approves his move to Scotland he will become the latest signing in Pedro Caixinha’s summer rebuild, following on from Bruno Alves and Ryan Jack.

Pena has set his sights on a career in Europe and is ready to return to Scotland to take up the new challenge at Ibrox just as soon as he gets permission.

Meanwhile Rangers have dismissed reports they tabled a bid of just under £1million for Norwich midfielder Graham Dorrans.

Speculation about the Scotland star has increased with reports the boyhood Rangers fan – with two years left on his Carrow Road contract – hopes to move north for family reasons.
