Oliver Dowling, 32, of New Zealand, is recovering from a fourhour operation after receiving multiple stab wounds in the attack.

His sister Freddy revealed on Facebook he suffered knife wounds to the face, neck and stomach. She wrote: “Doctors are very happy with how he’s come out the other side. A massive thank you to the University of London Hospital for their tireless efforts in helping my brother out!”

Oliver’s girlfriend Marie Bondeville also suffered injuries in the attack but her status is unknown.

Freddy added: “Marie has been in surgery at another hospital but unfortunately we haven’t been able to find out how she is due to not being immediate family.”

As well as victims who required urgent medical assistance, scores of walking wounded were treated for more minor wounds.

A rest centre was set up at London South Bank University and staffed through the night by British Red Cross volunteers.
