Scotland’s World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread while England top Group F but Berra is convinced our fiercest foes will be petrified by the prospect of a savaging by their own media if they lose at Hampden.

The Hearts skipper said: “They are top players but they will have a bit of a fear factor as well. There is a lot of pressure on England.

“If they lose against us the press will ridicule them. I always say the press is bad but if you go to other countries such as Spain, Italy and Germany then the press will be the same and you will get stick. That is part and parcel of football and sport.

“They are under pressure to do well, it is going to be a tough game for both teams.”

England might be on a hiding to nothing but Berra admitted Scotland are still the underdogs. He reckons we can get to England and end 32 years of Hampden pain against our oldest and greatest rivals.

Berra said: “We are at Hampden so the fans will be right behind us. We want to play good football but you also have to use the atmosphere and be on the front foot. We want to play at a high tempo and make it a difficult game for them.

“We have good players but they have excellent players as well.”

England stars were dressed in full military gear and given exercises and Southgate said: “We wanted to put the guys into a different environment, something they weren’t expecting.” COLIN TODD’S OG WIN IT... 1976: CLOSE YER LEGS RAY, KING KENNY’S ON MARK... 1984: MARK McGHEE’S BELTER STUNS SHILTON... 1985: BIG GOUGH AT THE BACK POSTLAND...
