RECORD’S MESSAGE OF HOPE

- BY PAUL LAVERTY I, Daniel Blake screenwriter

THE team behind the movie I, Daniel Blake yesterday praised the Daily Record’s election day front page.

Legendary film director Ken Loach retweeted our call to Britain to vote for hope and Scottish screenwriter Paul Laverty, the man who wrote the movie, was moved to pen these words:

“As I stood in the rain this morning reading the bold front page of the Daily Record I swear my mind was flooded with the faces of people we met in food banks from London to Glasgow while we prepared I, Daniel Blake.

“A workable Tory majority will mean misery for them, and for all those listed on the front page, but there is another missing category. Us. Whoever we are, because systematic injustice infects us all, eats at cohesion, and diminishes everyone.

“If our tax money is being given to Maximus to bully our sick, we are all the losers. But the front page in capital letters calls on us to choose HOPE.

“Over 1500 years ago, Saint Augustine told us HOPE has two beautiful daughters; anger at the way things are, and the courage to change them. Hope must transcend June 8 (as the result might demand) and become a habit like breathing. Hope is the fuel to give us the energy to organise.

“Woody Guthrie, the great American singer, used to say, ‘All about a human being is, is a great big hoping machine.’

“We will have to dig deep on June 9 and fight even harder. Some truths don’t age with time.”
