Sturgeon silent on IndyRef2

- DAVID CLEGG Political Editor

NICOLA Sturgeon refused to give clarity on her IndyRef2 plans yesterday.

Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson demanded the First Minister drop proposals for another vote on Scotland’s future after a Daily Record poll showed only 27 per cent of Scots want one.

But Sturgeon, who has acknowledged that IndyRef2 was a factor in the SNP losing 21 seats in last week’s general election, dodged the issue at First Minister’s Questions.

Our Survation poll showed 60 per cent of Scots don’t want another referendum.

Davidson said: “Nicola Sturgeon says she’s listening to the folk of Scotland, and so she should. Her referendum isn’t wanted, so will she ditch it now?”

The First Minister replied by repeating her post-election position that she would proceed with “calm reflection in the national interest”.

She added: “I think what Ruth Davidson has just demonstrated there is that she is nothing more than a one-trick pony. Having to confront any issue other than an independence referendum, she is left floundering.”

The First Minister called on Davidson to set out her position on Brexit instead as negotiations are due to start.

She said: “In just four days’ time, we are going to be led off the cliff edge by a Tory Government devoid of legitimacy and credibility, and utterly clueless about what they are trying to achieve. That is the real and present danger to Scottish jobs, investment and living standards.”

Labour’s Lewis Macdonald also later called on Sturgeon to drop plans for IndyRef2.

The MSP said: “Given that the First Minister has said that she wants to be involved in negotiating Brexit on behalf of the UK, will she not recognise that she cannot be sitting at the top table and heading for the exit at the same time?”
