Shoppers’ horror as man dies in mall plunge

SHOPPERS screamed in horror after a man died in a fall from a balcony at a busy shopping centre yesterday.

The incident caused the evacuation of Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries.

It is thought he fell from an upper floor near the south entrance to the mall.

One onlooker spoke of “massive bang” as the man crashed to the floor near the foot of an escalator and screams ringing out.

He was initially thought to have been seriously injured but it was later confirmed he had died.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene just before 2pm.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 1.45pm to attend an incident at the Buchanan Galleries.

“We dispatched one ambulance, a paramedic response unit, trauma team and manager to the scene.

“The first unit were on scene within three minutes.”

A spokesman for Buchanan Galleries said: “We can confirm an incident took place within the centre.

“We are co-operating fully with the emergency services and assisting them with their inquiries.”
