REPORTS that Scotland is set to enjoy sizzling temperatures this weekend were met with cynicism yesterday.

The Met Office said temperatures could reach the mid-20s but, rather than look out the suncream and dust off their barbecues, many of our online readers took to their keyboards to make their own gloomy predictions.

Elaine Robertson wrote on our Facebook page: “It will only be the hottest weekend if you have your central heating on. LOL.”

Angela Small agreed: “Currently sitting with heating on and definitely can’t see a heatwave this weekend.” John Foster added: “Get all us Scottish folks’ hopes up only to be disappointed no doubt.”

Thomas McLaughlin said: “Believe it when I see it.”

But at least some readers displayed that eternal optimism that is required to make it through a typical Scottish summer.

Jacquie Murray wrote: “Yay! At last our summer’s day has arrived.” And Ian Nohar added: “Looking oot ma Speedos as we speak…”
