Joy of Sexton will be no anti-climax

INJURY to Owen Farrell does not have to spell disaster for the Lions – if Johnny Sexton rediscovers his form.

I understand the worry ahead of today’s Test dress rehearsal. Of course Farrell’s absence will be felt.

But all the qualities that make him a five-star general are exactly those showcased by Sexton. People forget what Johnny did for the triumphant 2013 Lions and he was at the helm when Ireland beat the All Blacks last autumn.

He was also outstanding when the Irish denied England a Grand Slam in March. Sexton can play, the question is whether he can deliver that level of performance today. It is a massive game for him.

Regardless of whether Farrell gets back in time, Sexton is being pushed all the way by Dan Biggar. He needs the game of his life.

When you play the Maori, as I did in 2005, you feel you’re facing the All Blacks. They wear the same kit and have a lot of similar players.

My message for Sexton is less is more. Don’t try to do too much yourself. Make sure the Lions are playing in the right areas and you feed the right players and make the right calls.

If you manage the game coolly then whatever the news on Farrell the Lions can sleep easy.
