Struthers: We hope teams will coast to glory

-

LAST month North Berwick topped the list of Scotland’s most expensive seaside towns – now they want to be one of the wealthiest when it comes to fledgling football talent too.

The North Berwick Colts, a thriving local club, were formed in 1994 and welcome boys and girls from primary one age through to high school.

Under-13s coach Andy Struthers said: “When we started many of the girls played in boys’ teams – it was the only way they could get a game.

“Now we have more than 40 players over three age groups and we are growing every season.”

Increasing player and volunteer numbers is central to their growth strategy and Struthers said: “We provide a rounded training programme, encouraging teamwork, respect, decision making and leadership.

“We have a real pathway in place but we can’t do it without our amazing coaches and volunteers.”

North Berwick Colts also attract strong local sponsorship, something other clubs often find difficult. And Struthers added: “I have seen such a difference in my few years at the club and we really have some great talent coming through the ranks.

“This is a great place to live and I have high hopes for the future of the girls team. A lot is down to our thriving community.”
