CELTIC strengthen­ed their hand with the signing of Jonny Hayes but some callers believe the Irishman’s arrival doesn’t square with their European ambitions.

The draw for the Champions League qualifiers takes place this morning and there are Hoops fans who fear the club is trying to conquer the continent on the cheap.

Paul Carruthers, Wishaw, said: “No disrespect to Hayes, who’s a good player, but why are Celtic signing guys who don’t have the pedigree to succeed at the highest level?

“He’s a good player for Scottish football but we’re already far too strong at that level and everything is now about the Champions League. Brendan Rodgers needs to be allowed to spend serious money if we are to start making inroads as a top European side and the likes of Hayes aren’t going to cut it.”

Ian McKinstry, Lennoxtown, said: “Celtic have made millions in recent seasons and I want that money reinvested into the team. We are a good side but we need a few quality additions to make us a great one and they don’t come cheap.

“I like Hayes as a player but he has struggled in Europe with Aberdeen and we shouldn’t be signing players who can’t take us to a new level.”

Jim McClean, Rothesay, said: “It looks like the biscuit tin is back in the cupboard at Celtic Park, it’s no big deal paying just over £1million for Hayes.

“With all the money they have made, why not try and sign Patrick Roberts for £10m and show they mean business instead of shopping around the bargain basement like Rangers.”
