Anchored by Annette Bening’s tourde-force theatrics alongside Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning, this is a compelling family portrait daubed in a similar style to director Mike Mills’s previous picture, Beginners. Both films show affection for their characters and their many foibles, accepting there are no easy solutions to the friction that exists between parents and their children.
