Unite against those who’d divide us

-

IT IS heartbreaking to read the stories of courage and the stories of despair from those caught up in the Grenfell Tower disaster.

So many innocent lives lost, so many loved ones hoping for a miracle, so many questions – and so much anger.

Once again, we find ourselves in awe of the heroics of the emergency services, with those brave firefighters, shattered both physically and emotionally, doing their best to save lives.

We all looked on in horror, anger and dismay and we all share a collective desire to ensure that everything that can be done is being done to prevent future tragedies like this.

Theresa May’s response to the tragedy has been woeful and the blackened tower in west London today stands as monument to a tragedy that should never befall our rich country.

There has been so much upsetting news from London in recent weeks. The London Bridge terror attacks are still raw, and this week we saw another terror attack near a Finsbury Park mosque. As London mayor Sadiq Khan said, this was an attack on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect.

On behalf of Scottish Labour, I offer my condolences to the family and friends of the man who died outside the mosque, and our thoughts are with the people who have been injured, their families and friends.

We must all redouble our efforts to stand against those who seek to divide us.
