OPERATION GUARD BONZO

Police patrol quiet suburb to protect wounded crime boss

- JOHN FERGUSON j.ferguson@dailyrecord.co.uk

THE home of a gangland boss horrifically injured in a machete attack is under police guard. The Record understands kingpin Steven “Bonzo” Daniel signed himself out of hospital last week after coming out of a medically induced coma. And in a clear sign that a vicious turf war between Glasgow’s notorious Daniel and Lyons crime clans is not over, a police car has been spotted outside the drug dealer’s house in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow. Daniel, 37, was targeted by at least three men on May 18, who left him with injuries so serious it was thought he had been shot.

He suffered gashes to his nose, mouth and an eye when rivals trapped his car on a slip road near the M8.

The feud is understood to be the result of a power vacuum after former family head Jamie Daniel died of cancer.

There have been longrunning battles between his family and the Lyons family – led by Eddie Lyons snr.

In March, Bonzo’s cousin, drug dealer Robert Daniel, was shot on the arm outside his home in Stepps, another Glasgow suburb.

Several family members have been warned by the police that their life is under threat.

In a recent attack, James Gorman, who had been in jail for gun-running, had his face slashed in Possilpark. Suspected drug dealer Euan Johnston, 26, was shot dead last November as he sat in a black Audi RS4 in the city’s Shields Road.

In January, Ross Monaghan was shot in the back, allegedly by a hitman with a gun hidden in a child’s buggy, as he dropped his daughter off at a school in Penilee.

Jamie Daniel’s son Francis “Fraggle” Green was targeted in the feud in February when shots were fired at his home in Milton of Campsie, north of Glasgow.

Police have said they will adopt a zero tolerance approach to the tit-for-tat attacks.

Referring to the guard on Bonzo’s house, a spokeswoman for the force said yesterday: “Police are in the area as part of an ongoing investigation.”
